Saint Thomas (Minn.) at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build on narrow midweek victories meet Wednesday when Northwestern hosts Saint Thomas (Minn.) in a nonconference baseball game at Rocky Miller Park.

First pitch is scheduled for evening, though rain is in the forecast with a game-time temperature of 69 degrees.

The Wildcats (15-21-1) enter after a 11-6 win over Bradley on Tuesday, powered by a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance from center fielder Jack Lausch that included a home run. Lausch has been a key offensive catalyst, hitting safely in eight of his last 10 games with three homers and 10 RBIs in that stretch.

Northwestern’s pitching will look to contain a Saint Thomas (6-26) lineup coming off a high-scoring 9-8 loss at Milwaukee on Tuesday. Tommies designated hitter Lucas McNellis went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs in that defeat.

A player to watch for the Tommies is pitcher Evan Esch, who delivered a strong relief outing Tuesday, throwing 6 2/3 innings of hitless ball with two earned runs and four strikeouts. How his arm recovers may factor into the Saint Thomas pitching plan.

The Wildcats have shown more consistency lately, winning three of their last five, while the Tommies have lost seven of their last eight. According to Interstat’s game simulator, Northwestern is projected for a 4-3 victory.

Following this contest, Northwestern begins a three-game series at Minnesota on Friday. Saint Thomas travels to face Omaha for a three-game set starting Friday.
