Morehead State at Marshall

Preview: Morehead State Eagles at Marshall Thundering Herd

BECKLEY, W.Va. (Interstat) — Two teams with identical records seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Morehead State Eagles face the Marshall Thundering Herd in a non-conference baseball game at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening under clear skies with temperatures near 58 degrees.

Both clubs enter at 18-20 overall. Morehead State looks to rebound from a high-scoring series loss at home to Lindenwood, dropping two of three, including an 18-13 defeat Sunday. Marshall arrives after dropping a road series at South Alabama, falling 4-1 in Sunday’s finale.

A key player to watch for the Eagles is shortstop Nicholas Griffith. He is coming off a powerful performance Sunday, going 1 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs in the loss to Lindenwood. Over his last 10 games, Griffith has three home runs and eight RBIs.

For the Thundering Herd, pitcher Kenyon Collins is a notable figure following a dominant outing his last time out. On April 19 at South Alabama, Collins threw six hitless innings of relief, allowing no earned runs and striking out five. His recent outings have been inconsistent, but he provides a potent arm out of the bullpen.

In Sunday’s loss for Morehead State, Ian McCubbin (3 for 4, HR, 2 RBIs) and Aubrey Kearns (3 for 5, HR, 2 RBIs) joined Griffith in providing offensive highlights despite the result. For Marshall in its Sunday loss, Evan Bottone drove in the team’s lone run.

The teams are projected for another meeting next Tuesday, April 28, in Morehead, Kentucky.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Morehead State 6, Marshall 4.

Following this contest, Morehead State will host Southern Indiana for a three-game series starting Friday. Marshall will return home to open a Sun Belt Conference series against Troy on Friday.
