Cal State Fullerton at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — The Cal State Fullerton Titans and Long Beach State Dirtbags will continue their Big West Conference series Saturday at Blair Field, with the Titans looking to build momentum after a narrow series-opening victory.

Fullerton (14-15 overall) edged Long Beach State 1-0 on Friday night to open the three-game set. The Dirtbags (10-21) will aim to even the series as both teams seek consistency in conference play.

A player to watch for the Titans is reliever Dylan Nieto. The right-hander has been effective lately, not allowing a hit in his last 4 1/3 innings pitched over four appearances. In Fullerton’s most recent game, a 7-3, 10-inning loss to UCLA on Tuesday, Nieto threw 1 2/3 hitless innings.

For Long Beach State, outfielder Matt Toomey has been a bright spot in the lineup. He is coming off a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs in Monday’s 10-5 loss to California Baptist. In the Dirtbags’ 17-4 win at Cal State Northridge on April 3, Toomey drove in three runs.

The Titans have won four of their last six games, including taking three of four from UC Riverside last weekend. Long Beach State has struggled, losing seven of its last nine contests. Its lone series win in that span was a three-game sweep at Cal State Bakersfield from March 20-22.

According to Interstat, the Titans are projected as slight favorites. The game simulator predicts a 4-3 Fullerton victory, and the ELO rating system gives the Titans a 53.6% probability to win.

First pitch is scheduled for Saturday afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures around 65 degrees at historic Blair Field.

The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon.
