Portland at Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots and Gonzaga Bulldogs continue their West Coast Conference series Saturday at Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. under cloudy skies and a temperature near 66 degrees.
Portland (20-10) looks to rebound after dropping the series opener 4-0 on Friday. The Pilots had won seven of their last nine before the shutout, including a 13-9 midweek victory over Oregon where their offense erupted.
A key to reigniting that offense will be second baseman Jonas Salk. He powered Wednesday’s win with a grand slam and four RBIs, one of two home runs in his last five games. Salk is batting .275 over his last 10 contests with two homers and 12 RBIs.
Gonzaga (17-14) has won three of its last four, including an 8-5 road win at Washington on Tuesday. The Bulldogs’ bullpen has been a strength, and right-hander Mickey McClaskey has been a pivotal arm. In his last appearance Tuesday, he threw 4 1/3 hitless innings in relief, allowing one earned run. Over his last six outings spanning 16 innings, he has surrendered just seven hits and five earned runs while striking out 21.
The Bulldogs’ offense was led in that win by shortstop Ricky Sanchez, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, favoring Gonzaga 7-6.
The three-game series concludes Sunday before Portland travels to Washington State on Monday. Gonzaga’s next series is at Saint Mary’s next Friday.
