Florida State at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA (Interstat) — The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets unleashed a historic offensive barrage Saturday afternoon, erasing an early deficit with a 15-run explosion over the final two innings to demolish the Florida State Seminoles 17-3 in a seven-inning Atlantic Coast Conference game shortened by the 10-run rule.
The game, played before an evening crowd at Russ Chandler Stadium, transformed from a tight pitchers’ duel into a one-sided rout, cementing a series sweep for the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets and extending their winning streak.
Florida State struck first. Center fielder Brayden Dowd launched a solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning off Georgia Tech starter Jackson Blakely. The Seminoles added another run in the second on a solo shot from McCulley and made it 3-2 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dowd, who finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
For four innings, Florida State starter Bryson Moore was dominant, allowing no hits and striking out five. However, he was lifted after three innings due to a high pitch count, having walked two and allowed two earned runs. His departure opened the door.
Georgia Tech tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double from Jarren Advincula and took a 4-3 lead on a run-scoring single by Hernandez. The floodgates then burst open against the Seminoles’ bullpen. A two-run double from Baker and a two-run single from shortstop Carson Kerce capped a five-run fifth, giving the Yellow Jackets a 7-3 advantage.
The most important part of the game, however, was the bottom of the sixth inning, a relentless display that saw 16 Yellow Jackets come to the plate and 13 cross home plate. The inning featured three home runs and sent Florida State through four different pitchers.
Caleb Daniel started the scoring with a solo homer. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Zuckerman cleared them with a three-run double. Following a walk and a passed ball that allowed another run to score, Kerce delivered the decisive blow, a two-run single that gave him five RBIs for the game. Two batters later, Drew Burress capped his perfect 4-for-4 day with a three-run homer. Before the inning ended, Vahn Lackey added a solo shot, bringing the total to nine hits and 13 runs in the frame.
Kerce, the top star for Georgia Tech, went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, continuing his torrid series against the Seminoles. Burress added four hits, a homer and three RBIs. Blakely earned the win, going five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Brett Barfield and Jake Lankie combined for two perfect innings of relief to close it.
The loss dropped Florida State to 24-11 overall. Georgia Tech, one of the nation’s hottest teams, improved to 28-5. The 17 runs marked a season-high in ACC play for the Yellow Jackets and represented the most runs allowed by Florida State this season.
The result starkly contrasted with pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 7-5 Georgia Tech victory, while its ELO system had given Florida State a slight 50.40 percent probability to win. Instead, the Yellow Jackets authored a statement victory, outhitting the Seminoles 16 to 6 and capitalizing on two Florida State errors to fuel their biggest inning of the year.
