Holy Cross at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — The Bucknell Bison will look to rebound from a lopsided loss when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders in the opener of a Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday at Eugene B. Depew Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m., though forecasts call for rain and a temperature of 72 degrees.
The game is a quick rematch after Holy Cross (15-16, 1-0 Patriot) routed Bucknell (18-13, 0-1) 14-5 on Friday. The Crusaders have won four of their last five, while the Bison saw a four-game winning streak snapped.
A key figure in Friday’s win, Holy Cross reliever Jake Lenahan, will be a player to watch. The right-hander threw four scoreless innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts to secure the victory. Over his last seven appearances, Lenahan has allowed earned runs in only three, showcasing his importance to the Crusaders’ bullpen.
Bucknell will counter with the bat of Garrett Mathias, who provided most of his team’s offense Friday with a three-run homer as part of a 2-for-5 day. The designated hitter has been a consistent run producer, driving in 11 runs over his last 10 games.
Despite Friday’s result, Interstat’s game simulator projects a tight contest, favoring Bucknell 7-6. The Bison hold the better overall record and had been playing well prior to the series opener, including a road sweep of Lafayette and a 9-0 shutout at Penn State last month.
Holy Cross will continue its road swing with a non-conference game at Brown on Tuesday before hosting Navy next weekend. Bucknell travels to Villanova on Tuesday before a pivotal four-game Patriot League series at Army West Point next weekend.
