PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — Mason Cook pitched 6 1/3 hitless innings and Augusto Mungarrieta drove in three runs as Kansas held off a late BYU rally to win 7-6 on Friday night at Larry H. Miller Field.

The Jayhawks improved to 39-15 overall and 2-0 in the weekend Big 12 series after taking the opener Thursday. BYU fell to 26-27.

Cook, the Kansas starter, allowed three earned runs on no hits, walked two and struck out six. He retired the first 15 BYU batters in order before issuing a hit-by-pitch and a walk in the fourth inning, but the Cougars did not get a hit until the seventh. Cook exited after allowing a triple and a sacrifice fly in that inning.

Mungarrieta went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Tyson Owens was 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Jordan Bach went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Easton Jones hit a three-run homer for BYU in the eighth inning. Crew McChesney tripled and drove in two runs. Nate Gray took the loss in relief, allowing four earned runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Kansas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With two outs, Bach doubled down the right-field line to score Christian Osoria, who had walked and advanced on a wild pitch.

The Jayhawks added two more in the fourth. Osoria walked again and scored on Bach’s single to right-center. Mungarrieta followed with a double to left-center that scored Bach.

Kansas broke the game open in the sixth. Bach walked, and Mungarrieta hit his 13th home run of the season to right-center, making it 5-0. Jayden LeBlanc then homered to right, his 19th, for a 6-0 lead.

BYU’s first hit finally came in the seventh. With one out, Dakota Robinson walked and Jones walked. McChesney tripled to deep right field, scoring both runners. After a pitching change, Landon Wolfgramm hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring McChesney and cutting the lead to 6-3.

In the eighth, BYU tied the game. With two outs, Cody Anderson was hit by a pitch and Robinson walked. Jones then hit his 12th home run of the season to deep left field, knotting the score at 6.

Kansas answered immediately in the top of the ninth. Owens led off with his 12th home run of the season to deep right field, giving the Jayhawks a 7-6 lead.

Boede Rahe pitched the ninth for Kansas, allowing a one-out infield single to Wolfgramm, who then stole second. Rahe struck out Jacob Hansen, got pinch-hitter Matt Erickson to line out, and then induced a ground ball to first on which he committed a fielding error to put the tying run on base. But he got Anderson to fly out to right to end the game.

Kansas outhit BYU 10-3. The Jayhawks used three pitchers: Cook, Cameron Scheidt and Rahe. BYU used four pitchers: Garrison Sumner, Gray, Ashton Johnson and Michael Erickson. Sumner started and allowed three earned runs on five hits over four innings.

The win was the second straight for Kansas after a three-game sweep at the hands of West Virginia. BYU had won its previous game against Utah Valley.
