Missouri 6, at Texas 11

Missouri at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns look to continue their dominant run when they host the Missouri Tigers in a Southeastern Conference baseball series opener Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 85 degrees.

Texas (38-12) enters with the superior record, while Missouri (22-28) has struggled to find consistency. The Longhorns won Thursday’s series opener 6-3, taking advantage of a strong start by right-hander Dylan Volantis.

Volantis, a key player to watch for Texas, allowed two hits and one earned run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts in that victory. The performance continued a trend for the junior, who has been sharp in his last two outings. On May 1 against Mississippi State, Volantis threw six shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out 12. He also tossed six shutout innings at Vanderbilt on April 24, allowing no hits and one earned run with 11 strikeouts. The only blemish on his recent ledger came May 8 at Tennessee, when he allowed three earned runs over five innings.

Missouri will counter with right-hander Josh McDevitt, who took the loss Thursday after allowing one earned run over three innings. McDevitt has been effectively wild this season. In his previous start May 1 at Georgia, he tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts. On April 23 against Arkansas, McDevitt struck out 11 over 6 1/3 innings but surrendered three earned runs.

The Tigers’ offense has been inconsistent. Missouri scored just three runs Thursday, with first baseman Jase Woita providing a two-run homer. In its previous series, Missouri split two games with Vanderbilt, winning 4-1 on Sunday before losing 11-8 in 11 innings Saturday. The Tigers dropped three of four at Georgia earlier this month and have lost five of their last seven overall.

Texas, meanwhile, has won 10 of its last 13. After Thursday’s win, the Longhorns have posted double-digit hits in four straight. Third baseman Casey Borba went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the series opener.

An Interstat game simulator projects Texas as a heavy favorite, forecasting a 6-2 victory with an 82.2 percent win probability for the Longhorns.

The series concludes with a Saturday afternoon game. Missouri will need a strong start from McDevitt and timely hitting to slow a Texas lineup that has scored at least six runs in nine of its last 11 games.
