South Dakota State at Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — South Dakota State visits Omaha on Friday in a Summit League baseball matchup, with both teams seeking to build momentum as the regular season winds down.
The Jackrabbits (17-27) take on the Mavericks (18-24) at 6 p.m. The forecast calls for temperatures in the low 70s with partly cloudy skies.
Friday’s game is the second in a four-game series. South Dakota State won the opener Wednesday in Brookings, 5-0, behind a dominant pitching performance. The Jackrabbits have won three of their last four, including a 16-13 victory over Saint Thomas last Friday.
Omaha dropped Wednesday’s game but had taken two of three at Oral Roberts last weekend, winning 8-6 and 7-5 before falling 4-3.
A key figure for South Dakota State is right-hander Drew McDowell. He was the winning pitcher Wednesday, throwing six shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out seven. That performance followed a rough outing April 18 against Oral Roberts, when he recorded no outs and allowed four earned runs. McDowell has been inconsistent but showed his potential in the series opener.
Omaha counters with Cameron Teinert, a pitcher whose recent outings have been unpredictable. He also threw three scoreless innings Wednesday, allowing no hits with one strikeout. However, in his five appearances before that, he had allowed earned runs in two of them, including three runs in two-thirds of an inning on May 1 against Northern Colorado. Teinert has been used in relief, and his ability to limit damage will be crucial.
The Mavericks have struggled to generate offense in losses to South Dakota State, managing only one run in their last two meetings dating to last season. Omaha scored five or fewer runs in nine of its last 11 games.
South Dakota State’s offense has been more productive, averaging 7.6 runs over its last five contests. Catcher Nate Wachter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Wednesday’s win.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 victory for South Dakota State.
Both teams conclude the series Saturday with another game at Omaha’s home field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
