Oral Roberts at Northern Colorado
GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — Brendan Asher rebounded from a difficult start earlier in the week and tossed six innings of two-hit ball to lead the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to a 14-2 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears on Friday evening at Jackson Field.
Asher, who allowed five earned runs in just two innings against Cincinnati on May 5, held Northern Colorado to two runs on two hits while striking out five over six innings. He did not allow a hit until the second inning, when the Bears strung together three consecutive hits to score both of their runs. Maddox Thornton followed with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
The Golden Eagles improved to 31-21 overall and evened their three-game Summit League series at one game apiece after losing 7-6 to the Bears on Thursday. Northern Colorado dropped to 16-35.
Oral Roberts broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on six hits. Makani Tanaka started the rally with a two-run homer to right field that scored Will Edmunson, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. After a single by Wailele Kane Yates and a fielder’s choice, Martell Davis singled to put runners on first and second.
The Bears then went through three pitchers in the inning. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, a wild pitch scored Cooper Combs, and another wild pitch moved Davis to third and Cooper Kelly to second. Tyler Brodrick followed with a bases-loaded walk to force in Davis. Jax Pfister entered and surrendered a three-run double to Hudson Ellis that cleared the bases. Kole Dudding, pinch-hitting for Edmunson, then launched a two-run homer to left field to cap the outburst.
Tanaka finished 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs. Ellis went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Edmunson also drove in three runs, going 2-for-5 before being replaced by Dudding. Kane Yates recorded three hits in four at-bats with two RBIs.
The Bears took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sam Pease singled, Mason Griffin doubled and Ethan Sanchez followed with a two-run single to right-center field, giving Northern Colorado a 2-0 lead. But that was all the Bears could manage against Asher and the Oral Roberts bullpen.
Oral Roberts answered immediately in the top of the second. Cooper Kelly and Ethan Fender walked, and Tyler Brodrick singled to load the bases. After a strikeout, Edmunson singled to left field, driving in two runs to tie the game. Kane Yates then singled to left, scoring Edmunson and Brodrick to put the Golden Eagles ahead 4-2.
Oral Roberts added a run in the sixth when Edmunson singled home Ellis, who had led off with a single and advanced to second on a balk.
Northern Colorado pitchers combined for nine strikeouts but issued six walks and hit four batters. Reliever Ethan Louthan worked two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Brady Hudson struck out three in a perfect inning of relief. Gus Allred and Mason Bright each pitched one inning, with Bright allowing four runs, two earned.
The Bears had eight hits, led by two from Jaden Stone. Ethan Sanchez drove in both runs.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Northern Colorado 6, Oral Roberts 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Oral Roberts with a 78.60 percent probability to win.
