Alabama A&M at Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — Southern looks to build momentum in Southwestern Athletic Conference play when it hosts Alabama A&M on Friday evening at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field. First pitch is scheduled under clear skies with a temperature of 89 degrees.

The Jaguars (21-21) enter on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Mississippi Valley State on the road last weekend. Southern has won seven of its last 10 games and sits at .500 overall. The Bulldogs (7-41) have lost five straight and 10 of their last 11, with their only win in that stretch coming May 2 at Prairie View.

Designated hitter Glenn Green has been a driving force for Southern. In the sweep at Mississippi Valley State, Green went 5-for-6 with three RBIs in Sunday’s 12-8 victory and has collected multiple hits in three of his last four games, totaling eight RBIs over that span. He had four RBIs in the series opener May 1.

Alabama A&M’s Tervell Johnson provides the Bulldogs’ primary offensive threat. The second baseman has shown pop with three home runs in his last 10 games, including a solo homer and two RBIs in a 10-3 loss to Florida A&M on May 9. Johnson is batting .333 with eight RBIs over his past six contests.

The teams met Thursday, with Southern earning a victory. Friday’s game is the second of a three-game series, with the finale scheduled Saturday.

Alabama A&M’s pitching staff has struggled, allowing 10 or more runs in three of its last five games. The Bulldogs’ last win over a SWAC opponent came April 25 against Jackson State.

Southern’s bullpen has been effective, with relievers Caleb Ellis and Caden Brown combining for 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the series finale against Mississippi Valley State.

Interstat’s game simulator projects Southern winning 7-2, giving the Jaguars an 80.7 percent probability of victory.
