Creighton at Xavier

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Isaac Wachsmann hit two home runs, but a late rally by Xavier lifted the Musketeers to a 3-2 victory over Creighton on Friday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.

Wachsmann, the Bluejays’ center fielder, finished 2 for 4 with two homers and two RBIs, accounting for all of Creighton’s scoring. His solo shot in the top of the first inning put Creighton ahead 2-0, and after Xavier tied the game, his second solo homer in the top of the eighth inning briefly gave the Bluejays the lead.

Xavier, however, answered in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Gould came on in relief for Creighton with two outs in the seventh and faced one batter, then was replaced by a string of relievers. The inning began with a walk to Fitz, who then stole second. Hammond sacrificed him to third with a bunt. Townsend then reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Fitz thrown out at home plate by the pitcher. Crisp pinch-ran for Townsend. Johnson singled to shortstop, moving Crisp to third. Thomas then singled to center field, driving in Crisp and giving Xavier a 3-2 lead. Anthony Unga came in to pitch and retired the next batter to end the inning.

Creighton threatened in the top of the ninth. After two quick outs, Deters singled and Baillargeon singled to put runners on first and second, but Venteicher flied out to right field to end the game.

Ashton Chronister was the star for Xavier. The pitcher worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out two and walking one. He did not factor into the decision but kept the Musketeers in the game after Creighton’s early homer. Garrett Helsel pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts to earn the win.

Wilson Magers started on the mound for Creighton and threw four shutout innings, allowing no hits and one earned run with three strikeouts, but he was lifted after the third inning when Xavier tied the game. Jakob Ruhl, Eli Nissen, Jimmy Burke, Brian Gould and Anthony Unga combined for the remainder of the game. Ruhl pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Nissen worked 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout, Burke faced two batters, Gould faced one, and Unga recorded the final out.

Xavier’s Luke Hammond hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to cut Creighton’s lead to 2-1. The Musketeers tied the game in the third when Burdette reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and later scored on a double by Stonehouse.

Creighton managed eight hits in the game, including two from Deters, who went 2 for 4 with a single and a single, and Baillargeon, who was 2 for 4. Xavier had seven hits, with Stonehouse doubling and driving in a run, and Thomas driving in the game-winner.

The Bluejays fell to 29-23 overall, while Xavier improved to 26-28. The victory avenged a 5-2 loss to Creighton on Thursday in the first game of the series.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Xavier 6, Creighton 4, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Creighton a 54.60 percent probability to win.
