Clemson at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Clemson and Virginia Tech meet for the second game of their three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series Friday afternoon at English Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 51 degrees.

The Tigers (30-24) dropped the series opener 5-1 on Thursday, managing just six hits. Virginia Tech (28-22) got a dominant start from right-hander Brett Renfrow, who struck out five over 7⅓ innings while allowing one earned run.

Renfrow is the Hokies’ player to watch. The right-hander has been electric in his last three starts, posting a 0.39 ERA over 22⅓ innings with 23 strikeouts. He threw a complete-game shutout against North Carolina State on April 24 and fired seven scoreless innings at California on May 1 before Thursday’s strong outing.

Clemson will counter with right-hander Danny Nelson, who took the loss in Thursday’s game, allowing two earned runs in 3⅓ innings despite not giving up a hit. Nelson has been effective overall this season, tossing four scoreless innings in a win over Florida State on May 9 and two scoreless innings against Coastal Carolina on May 5.

The Tigers have lost three of their last four and are 3-7 in their past 10 games. Virginia Tech has won three of its last four and is 6-4 in its past 10.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 Virginia Tech victory, but the site’s ELO system gives Clemson a 56.4 percent chance to win.

The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. start at English Field. Both teams are battling for positioning in the ACC standings heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
