Pepperdine at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA (Interstat) — Max Bayles pitched six innings of three-hit shutout ball with 12 strikeouts and Max Ross hit an inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning as Santa Clara shut out Pepperdine 10-0 on Thursday at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Bayles allowed only one runner to reach second base, a double by Pepperdine’s K. Laxa in the second inning, and struck out the side twice. He improved to an undetermined record after his second consecutive scoreless start, following a five-inning, six-strikeout win at Seattle on May 8. The Broncos, now 23-28 overall, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Will Anderson doubled to left field with two outs, driving in Luke Devine and Skyler Luetzow, who had singled earlier in the inning. That proved to be all the support Bayles needed. He faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings, aided by a double play in the third.

Pepperdine starter Casey Euper went four innings, allowing three earned runs despite surrendering no hits, according to the official stat line. The stat line contradicted the play-by-play, as Euper allowed six hits, including the first-inning double and a triple by Payton Lambert in the fourth inning that led to a run on a groundout by Viskovich.

The Waves (21-30) put a runner on third in the second inning but failed to score. Laxa doubled with one out, advanced on a wild pitch, but was left stranded after two strikeouts.

Santa Clara broke the game open in the fifth inning. After a leadoff single by Thomas Ferroggiaro, reliever K. Croghan entered and immediately faced trouble. A single by Cleary and a hit batter loaded the bases. Devine singled to left field, scoring Ferroggiaro, and a throwing error by left fielder Lucas allowed two more runs to score and Devine to advance to second. Devine later scored on a double by pinch-hitter Garcia, making it 7-0.

Jackson Pace pitched a scoreless inning for Pepperdine, striking out two.

In the sixth, Ferroggiaro doubled to drive in Rayment, who had singled and stolen second. The Broncos added two more in the seventh. Anderson walked, stole second, and Ross hit an inside-the-park home run to center field, capping the scoring at 10-0.

Nick Chow pitched the seventh inning for Santa Clara, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Pepperdine managed only four hits. K. Laxa doubled, Patterson singled in the third, Dell’Amico singled in the seventh, and Aude doubled in the fifth. The Waves struck out 14 times and left five runners on base.

The loss extended Pepperdine’s struggles on the road, while Santa Clara snapped a two-game losing streak. The teams continue their series Friday and Saturday at Schott Stadium.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Pepperdine 7, Santa Clara 6, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Santa Clara a 66.20 percent probability to win.
