Portland at Pepperdine
MALIBU, Calif. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots will try to salvage the finale of their three-game West Coast Conference series against the Pepperdine Waves on Sunday evening at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under partly cloudy skies with a temperature of 78 degrees.
Portland (25-22 overall) has dropped the first two games of the series, losing 5-3 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday. The Pilots have lost five of their last seven games overall.
Pepperdine (20-29) is seeking its third consecutive victory and its fourth win in its last five games.
The pitching matchup will feature two right-handers who faced each other in Saturday’s game.
Portland’s Trey Newmann will start on three days’ rest. In Saturday’s loss, Newmann pitched 6 innings, allowing 0 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 6. The start was typical of an inconsistent season for Newmann, who has alternated strong outings with struggles. In his last five appearances, he has posted a 6.75 ERA over 22 2/3 innings with 27 strikeouts but also 14 earned runs allowed.
Pepperdine will counter with Jack Fowler, who earned the win Saturday after throwing 5 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 5. Fowler has been effective in recent outings, posting a 2.70 ERA over his last three appearances covering 9 innings. He has not allowed a run in two of those outings.
Portland catcher Carter Stewart had 2 hits, including a home run, in Saturday’s loss. The Pilots managed only 3 hits overall in that game.
Pepperdine catcher Shawn Romero hit a home run and drove in 2 runs Saturday.
The Waves have won three of the last four meetings between the teams dating to last season.
A computer projection from Interstat estimates a 6-4 Pepperdine victory.
After Sunday’s game, Portland travels to face Oregon State on Tuesday. Pepperdine opens a three-game series at Santa Clara on Thursday.
