Massachusetts at Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio (Interstat) — Carson Raether’s three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a stunning six-run rally as Miami (Ohio) defeated Massachusetts 8-7 on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Stanley G. McKie Field at Joseph P. Hayden Jr. Park.

The Redhawks entered the ninth trailing 7-2, facing a Minutemen team that had seized control with a five-run eighth inning. But Miami (Ohio) refused to fold, sending 10 batters to the plate in the final frame to complete the comeback and sweep the weekend series.

Massachusetts led 2-1 through four innings after scoring once in the third and holding the Redhawks to a single run in the first. Miami (Ohio) starter Troy Benko worked 6⅔ innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Benko departed after a hit-by-pitch in the seventh, but relievers Kaden Pfeffer and Carson Byers combined to keep the game at 2-1 entering the eighth.

The Minutemen broke through against the Miami (Ohio) bullpen in the eighth. Ryan Kolben singled, and after a strikeout, Jack Beverly singled. Matt Travisano then singled home Kolben to tie the game. Alex Gay relieved Byers but allowed a single to Gavin O’Brien and a two-run single to Reece McCarthy that gave Massachusetts a 5-2 lead. Jack Geiser entered and surrendered a single to Vance Bonior that drove in another run, pushing the lead to 7-2.

Massachusetts starter Sam Perry worked four innings of two-hit ball, allowing two runs on a first-inning walk, a passed ball and a hit-by-pitch before exiting. Michael Goodman took over and threw 4⅓ hitless innings, striking out four, but the Redhawks finally solved the Minutemen pitching in the ninth.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Dominic Krupinski reached on an error by second baseman Ty Fox. Marcus Dierks singled, and Evan Appelwick singled up the middle to drive in Krupinski. Tommy Harrison followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-4. Brandon Wingenroth replaced Goodman, and Ryan Novak greeted him with a double down the right-field line that scored Appelwick, making it 7-5. After Novak was replaced by pinch-runner Drew Hill, Raether stepped to the plate and launched a three-run homer to right field, scoring Harrison and Hill to give Miami (Ohio) an 8-7 lead. Geiser then set down the Minutemen in order in the top of the ninth to secure the win.

Raether finished 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Appelwick went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Novak had a double and an RBI for the Redhawks. Kolben led Massachusetts with a 3-for-4 day, driving in a run.
