Saint John`s at Villanova
VILLANOVA, Pa. (Interstat) — Saint John’s will look to complete a three-game sweep when it faces Villanova in a Big East doubleheader Sunday at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.
The Red Storm (28-22 overall) have taken the first two games of the series by a combined score of 11-1, including a 3-0 shutout Saturday. The Wildcats (17-28) return to their home field in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, for afternoon and evening contests. The forecast calls for temperatures near 60 degrees Fahrenheit with rain expected.
Saint John’s will rely on right-handed pitcher Evan Chaffee, who has been dominant in recent outings. In the Saturday win, Chaffee fired six scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out eight. Over his last four starts, he has logged a 2.37 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 19 innings, though he did allow five earned runs in a brief relief appearance April 25 against Xavier.
Villanova counters with pitcher Jack Kelley, who also went the distance Saturday despite taking the loss. He surrendered five hits and one earned run over seven innings with three strikeouts. Kelley’s season has been uneven — he struck out three in four scoreless innings May 2 against Georgetown, but yielded seven earned runs in three innings April 18 against Creighton.
The Red Storm have won five of their last six games after dropping two of three at Xavier in late April. Villanova has lost five of its last six, with its only win in that span coming May 6 against Towson.
An Interstat game simulator projects a 7-5 victory for Saint John’s on Sunday.
Following this series, Saint John’s hosts Butler for a three-game set beginning Thursday. Villanova visits Connecticut for a three-game series starting the same day.
