Toledo at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — Toledo and Ohio conclude a pivotal three-game Mid-American Conference series Sunday with a day-night doubleheader at Bob Wren Stadium.

The first game is scheduled for the afternoon, with the second contest to follow in the evening. The forecast calls for 65-degree temperatures and cloudy skies.

Toledo (26-25) won Saturday’s series opener, 7-5, after Ohio (10-40) took a 4-3, 10-inning victory Friday. The Rockets, fighting for a MAC tournament berth, are projected to win both games Sunday, with Interstat’s simulator forecasting an 8-2 final score for each contest.

Rockets right-hander Hayden Frey is a key figure for Toledo after a dominant outing Saturday. The junior pitched seven innings, allowing no hits, three earned runs and striking out eight. Over his past four starts (Interstat) — all but one a win (Interstat) — Frey has a 1.33 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 27 innings, including a three-hit shutout of Bowling Green on April 25.

Ohio catcher Tyler Stack enters the doubleheader after a 4-for-4 performance with two RBIs in Saturday’s loss. The sophomore has been one of the Bobcats’ few consistent producers during an 18-game losing streak that includes a 21-7 loss to Akron on April 24.

The series continues a difficult stretch for Ohio, which has lost 31 of its past 33 games. The Bobcats rank last in the MAC standings.

Toledo has won seven of its past nine games, including a 20-3 victory over Ball State last Sunday and an 18-8 win over Oakland on April 28.

Following Sunday’s doubleheader, Toledo travels to Bowling Green on Tuesday. Ohio visits Michigan on Tuesday before a three-game series at Eastern Michigan starting Thursday.
