Duke at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA (Interstat) — Jackson Blakely pitched 5 1/3 innings of three-hit, shutout ball and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pounded the Duke Blue Devils 14-1 in a seven-inning Atlantic Coast Conference game Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The victory completed a three-game sweep for Georgia Tech, which improved to 40-8 overall. Duke fell to 23-28. The Yellow Jackets have won nine of their last 10 games, while the Blue Devils have lost six straight.
Georgia Tech wasted little time seizing control. After Duke took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Logan Strand that scored Devin Hamilton and was aided by a fielding error by center fielder Drew Burress, the Yellow Jackets answered with five runs in the bottom half. The big blow came from first baseman Kent Schmidt, who launched a grand slam to deep right field, driving in Burress, second baseman Jarren Advincula and catcher Owen Lackey.
The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the third inning. Left fielder Parker Brosius lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Colin Zuckerman, and shortstop Carson Kerce doubled through the left side to drive in Schmidt. Georgia Tech led 7-1 after three.
Blakely, the game’s top star, retired the Blue Devils in order in the second and third innings and allowed only a double to Aiden Marsh in the second. He struck out seven and walked two, lowering his earned run average with a dominant outing. Duke starter James Leon lasted only three innings, charged with seven runs on six hits.
Georgia Tech broke the game open in the fifth. After reliever Marcello Mastroianni hit Brosius to put two runners on, Burress crushed a three-run homer to left field, scoring Liam Hernandez and Brosius to make it 10-1. The Yellow Jackets added four more in the sixth on Brosius’ grand slam to right field off reliever Roman DiGiacomo, scoring Zuckerman, Schmidt and Hernandez.
Brosius finished 1 for 2 with a home run and five RBIs. Schmidt went 1 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs. Burress was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Kerce led all hitters with four hits in five at-bats, including a double and an RBI.
Georgia Tech grounded into three double plays, but Duke managed only three hits total. The Blue Devils struck out 10 times and left five runners on base.
Duke’s bullpen struggled as Mastroianni allowed two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings and DiGiacomo gave up one earned run in one inning. Georgia Tech relievers Caden Gaudette and Cooper Underwood combined for 1 2/3 scoreless innings, with Underwood striking out one in the seventh.
The game was completed in seven innings under ACC mercy rule after Georgia Tech’s 10-run lead after six innings. The Yellow Jackets outhit Duke 13-3.
Duke had taken an early lead in the first when Hamilton singled and scored on Strand’s single to left center. The ball was misplayed by Burress, allowing Strand to advance to second. But Georgia Tech answered immediately and never trailed.
The sweep continued Georgia Tech’s dominance in the series. The Yellow Jackets also won 15-2 on Saturday and 10-9 in 10 innings on Friday. The Blue Devils have lost 12 of their last 15 games.
Georgia Tech next hosts Mercer on Tuesday, then travels to Boston College for a three-game ACC series starting Thursday. Duke hosts William & Mary on Tuesday before a home series against Wake Forest.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Georgia Tech 7, Duke 1, and the Yellow Jackets entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-5.5. The ELO system gave Georgia Tech a 66.90 percent probability to win.
