Saint Bonaventure at La Salle
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — La Salle will host Saint Bonaventure on Sunday in a baseball doubleheader at Hank DeVincent Field, with the first pitch scheduled for the afternoon and the nightcap under the lights. The Explorers (23-28-1) and Bonnies (12-33-1) meet for the third and fourth times this week after La Salle swept a doubleheader Friday, winning 8-11 and 9-18, respectively.
The forecast calls for a 65-degree Fahrenheit game time temperature with rain in the area, potentially impacting play on the outfield grass.
La Salle looks to extend its momentum behind catcher Jayden Novak. The sophomore is coming off a torrid series-opening performance, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs in the 11-8 win Friday, then adding another two-homer, five-RBI game in the 18-9 rout. Over his last five games, Novak has smacked five home runs and collected 16 RBIs, anchoring the middle of the Explorers’ order.
Saint Bonaventure will lean on center fielder Anthony Fernandez, who has been a bright spot in a difficult season. Fernandez went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs in the second game Friday, raising his average in the series. He has posted multi-hit performances in four of his last six games, though all have resulted in Bonnies losses.
The Bonnies have dropped 12 of their last 13 games overall and are 1-9 in their past 10 decisions. Their last win came April 21 at Niagara, a 13-8 victory that remains an outlier in an otherwise struggling campaign.
La Salle’s recent form has been mixed, with six wins in its last 12 contests. The Explorers have won four of their last five home games, with Novak’s bat leading a lineup that scored 18 runs Friday.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-2 final in favor of La Salle.
Following the doubleheader, La Salle travels to George Mason for a three-game series starting Thursday, while Saint Bonaventure returns home to host Fordham for a three-game set beginning the same day.
