BYU at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — The Big 12 series between BYU and Texas Tech shifts to Saturday afternoon, with the Red Raiders seeking to build on a narrow victory a day earlier and the Cougars aiming to even the set.

First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, where clear skies and a temperature of 87 degrees are forecast. The game is the second of a three-game weekend series. Texas Tech won the opener 2-1 on Thursday, and the teams played again Friday. The Red Raiders (25-24 overall) and Cougars (24-24 overall) are separated by a single game in the win column.

Projections offer an even split. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 5-4 BYU victory, while the ELO system gives Texas Tech a 62.4 percent probability of winning.

All eyes will be on the rematch between two starting pitchers who squared off Thursday. BYU right-hander Wayland Crane took the loss in that game despite allowing no hits over 5 2/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs, walked none and struck out four. Crane enters Saturday with a 2-2 record in his last four starts. He earned a win April 30 against Utah (5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 K) and another April 16 against Arizona State (4 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 5 K), but also took losses at Arizona on April 23 (5 IP, 0 H, 3 ER, 3 K) and in Thursday’s game.

Texas Tech counters with Kaysen Raineri, who earned the win Thursday. The right-hander worked five innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four. Raineri is 2-2 in his last four outings. He defeated Tarleton State on April 21 (4 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 K), but suffered a loss at Baylor on May 2 (5 IP, 0 H, 5 ER, 2 K) and another against Incarnate Word on April 15 (2 1/3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 K).

The Cougars have struggled in the series, scoring just one run over the first two games. Thursday’s loss extended a difficult stretch. BYU dropped two of three at Arizona in late April, split a weekend series with Utah at home, then traveled to Lubbock. Texas Tech has won three of its last four, taking two of three at Baylor before Thursday’s win and a midweek victory over Dallas Baptist.

After Saturday’s game, Texas Tech heads to Cincinnati for a three-game series starting May 14. BYU returns home to host Utah Valley and Kansas in consecutive series beginning the same week.
