Duke at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA (Interstat) — The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Duke Blue Devils meet Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series game. First pitch is scheduled under cloudy skies with temperatures around 72 degrees.
Georgia Tech (37-8) has won three straight and took the series opener Friday, 7-3. The Yellow Jackets, who lead the ACC standings, are projected to win Saturday’s contest 7-1 by Interstat’s game simulator.
Georgia Tech center fielder Drew Burress enters as one of the conference’s most productive hitters. Over his last six games, Burress has recorded multiple hits five times, including a 2-for-5, one-home run performance in Sunday’s 14-6 win over Xavier. He also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 14-11 win over Wake Forest on April 25 and was 4-for-4 with three RBIs in a 14-4 victory against Georgia on April 21.
Duke (23-25) has lost five of its last six. The Blue Devils dropped a midweek contest to Queens (N.C.) on Tuesday, 11-7, despite a standout performance from center fielder Michael DiMartini, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. DiMartini, however, has been inconsistent. He is 2-for-12 in his last three ACC road games, including an 0-for-2 outing at North Carolina on May 3 and an 0-for-4 showing in a 3-1 win over the Tar Heels on April 24. He also had a 3-for-5 day at Liberty on April 21.
The Blue Devils are hitting just .224 as a team in May. Kaden Smith provided power in Tuesday’s loss, going 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs, and RJ Hamilton added a 2-for-4 day with a home run and two RBIs.
Georgia Tech’s pitching staff has been effective. Right-hander Jackson Blakely threw 4.0 innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts in Sunday’s win over Xavier.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday. Duke then hosts William & Mary on Tuesday, while Georgia Tech hosts Mercer the same day. Both teams open ACC series next week — Duke against Wake Forest and Georgia Tech at Boston College.
