SIU Edwardsville at Eastern Illinois
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — SIU Edwardsville hammered Eastern Illinois 16-4 on Saturday afternoon at Coaches Stadium at Monier Field, overwhelming the Panthers with a relentless offensive attack in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup.
The Cougars improved to 29-21 overall, while Eastern Illinois dropped to 28-17. SIU Edwardsville seized control in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on a double, a run-scoring double and a two-run home run. Gierer doubled down the left-field line, Bloomer doubled to left field to drive in Gierer, and Niedzwiedz followed with a homer to right center that scored Bloomer. The early outburst set the tone for a game in which the Cougars never trailed.
Eastern Illinois starter Bryce Riggs lasted 4⅓ innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Jack Helms relieved and worked 4⅓ innings, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
The Panthers managed only four hits. Left fielder Brett Stanley went 1 for 4 with two RBIs, including a double in the seventh inning that drove in a run. Shortstop Peyton Wilson went 1 for 4 with an RBI, and right fielder Ethan Rossi was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly. Eastern Illinois scored its first run in the bottom of the third when Rossi, hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and to third on another groundout before scoring on an error by the Cougars’ second baseman.
SIU Edwardsville answered in the top of the fourth when Mitchell walked and Eggert homered to right center, making the score 5-0. The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to 5-3. James Love singled, Mike O’Conor singled, and after a sacrifice bunt, Wilson singled through the middle to score Love. Rossi then grounded out to the pitcher, scoring O’Conor on a sacrifice bunt.
That was as close as Eastern Illinois would get. In the top of the fifth, SIU Edwardsville erupted for four runs, punctuated by Gierer’s two-run homer to left field. The Cougars added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Mitchell, and three more in the eighth on Niedzwiedz’s third home run of the game—a solo shot to right center—and a run-scoring single by Eggert.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with three consecutive home runs. Fry homered to right center, Gierer homered to left field, and Bloomer homered to center field, all solo shots. Niedzwiedz singled later in the inning but was left stranded. The three homers in one inning underscored the Cougars’ power display.
Eastern Illinois’s final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Quade Peters walked, stole second and scored on Stanley’s double. The Panthers went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, managing only one baserunner after the seventh.
The most critical sequence occurred in the top of the fifth inning. After the Panthers had pulled within 5-3 by scoring three unearned runs in the fourth, the Cougars responded immediately. SIU Edwardsville loaded the bases on a walk, a fielder’s choice and an error, then took advantage of more defensive miscues. Kang’s sacrifice fly scored a run, Fry singled to drive in a run, and Gierer launched a two-run homer that made the score 9-3. That burst erased any momentum Eastern Illinois had built and effectively ended the contest.
The Cougars finished with 16 hits and took advantage of three Panther errors. Eastern Illinois managed just four hits and struck out eight times.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Eastern Illinois 7, SIU Edwardsville 6, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Panthers a 54.90 percent probability to win.
