Hawaii at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Jack Pezzolo pitched five and one-third innings of three-hit, scoreless relief, and Braydon Wooldridge delivered a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lift UC Davis to a 4-2 victory over Hawaii on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex.

The Aggies, who evened their overall record at 25-25, avenged a 4-1 loss to the Warriors a day earlier in the opener of the Big West series. Hawaii dropped to 16-17.

Pezzolo, the game’s top performer, entered in the sixth inning with the Aggies trailing 1-0 and retired the first two batters he faced before giving way to reliever Peter Storjohann after yielding three hits and two earned runs in two and one-third innings. Pezzolo struck out two and did not allow a runner past second base during his stint. He had a 5.0-inning, four-earned-run outing at Cal State Fullerton five days earlier.

Hawaii took an early lead in the top of the first inning. After the Warriors stranded a runner in scoring position, starting pitcher Hekili Robello worked three scoreless innings before UC Davis broke through in the third.

With one out, Kyle Wright was hit by a pitch. Zach Story doubled down the left-field line, putting runners at second and third. Jaden Howard grounded out to shortstop, scoring Wright to tie the game at 1-1. Colby Mault followed with a single to right field, but Story was thrown out at home plate by right fielder Kainalu Nahaku to preserve the tie.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when UC Davis erupted for three runs to seize control. Ethan Felix led off with a triple to right-center field. Connor Murphy singled to left, scoring Felix to break the deadlock. After a groundout moved Murphy to second, Wooldridge crushed a 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his fourth home run of the season, giving the Aggies a 4-1 lead.

Robello’s day ended after six and two-thirds innings. He allowed four runs on zero hits — a statistical anomaly — with five strikeouts and two walks. The Warriors’ bullpen trio of Ryan Inouye and Grant Garman combined for one and one-third perfect innings, striking out one.

Hawaii refused to go quietly in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Ben Zeigler-Namoa doubled to right-center field, driving in two runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Warriors had runners at first and second after a single by Wright Garman, but Storjohann struck out Lau Kong M. to end the threat.

UC Davis closer Rowen Barnes worked a flawless ninth, striking out one and allowing one hit in one and one-third innings to earn his third save of the season.

The Aggies finished with six hits, while Hawaii managed seven. The Warriors grounded into two double plays and executed two sacrifice bunts.

Hawaii’s most productive batter was Zeigler-Namoa, who went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. For UC Davis, Felix finished 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. Story went 1 for 3 with a double and a run.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for UC Davis, which had dropped four of its previous six Big West contests. Hawaii entered the weekend after a rough stretch that included losses in four of its last five games, including a three-game sweep at Oregon State.

The series concludes Sunday with a single game. UC Davis then hosts California Baptist for a three-game non-conference set starting Wednesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of UC Davis 6, Hawaii 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Hawaii with a 65.60 percent probability to win.
