Stony Brook at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. (Interstat) — First-place Northeastern will look to tighten its grip on the Colonial Athletic Association race when it hosts Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field.

The Huskies (29-18) enter the day with a decisive 12-3 victory over the Seawolves on Friday, extending their recent dominance in the series. Northeastern has won three of the four meetings this season, including a pair of one-run decisions in March. The only Stony Brook win came March 8, a 7-6 home victory.

Stony Brook (20-26) arrives after a lopsided loss in the series opener. Friday’s defeat dropped the Seawolves to 4-6 in their last 10 games.

Projected starter Evan Kay will be a key figure for Stony Brook. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on no hits over two innings in Friday’s loss, striking out one. In his two prior appearances, Kay pitched 2 1/3 combined scoreless innings, striking out two without allowing a hit. He will face a Northeastern lineup that produced 12 runs and 15 hits Friday.

Matt Brinker leads the Huskies’ attack. The designated hitter went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in Friday’s win, marking his third multi-hit game in the last four. Over his last 10 games, Brinker has driven in 17 runs, including two home runs during a weekend series at North Carolina A&T on April 18-19.

Northeastern has won nine of its last 12 overall. The Huskies are coming off a 4-5 loss at Monmouth on Sunday but swept the Hawks in the first two games of that series by a combined 23-11.

Stony Brook has struggled away from home, losing five of its last six road games. The Seawolves did earn a 7-4 victory at Saint John’s on Tuesday.

The weather forecast calls for cloudy skies and temperatures around 60 degrees at first pitch.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Northeastern victory, with the Huskies holding a 77.3 percent win probability according to the ELO system.

The teams close the three-game series Sunday. Northeastern then travels to Connecticut on Tuesday, while Stony Brook returns home to face Hofstra on May 14.
