Binghamton at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Binghamton Bearcats look to build on their winning record when they visit the Albany Great Danes in an America East baseball game Friday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Binghamton (24-18) enters the contest after dropping a 7-3 decision to Maine on Sunday, though reliever Vincent Luther turned in a strong outing with 2.1 scoreless innings. Luther, a key arm out of the bullpen, has not allowed an earned run in four of his last five appearances, including a scoreless frame in a 4-2 win over Bryant on April 17 and another in an 11-4 victory at Cornell on April 14. His only blip came April 26 against Longwood, when he gave up one earned run on four hits in one inning.

Albany (13-26) comes off a 12-10 loss at Marist on Tuesday, despite a solid performance from second baseman Patrick DeSarno, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. DeSarno has been a consistent presence at the plate, collecting multiple hits in four of his last eight games. He drove in a run in a 9-10 loss to Siena on April 18 and also knocked in a run in a 5-10 setback against Marist on April 28.

The Great Danes have struggled to find consistency, losing eight of their last 10 games. Their most recent win came May 2 at UMBC, an 8-4 victory, but they followed that with a 12-6 loss to the Retrievers the next day.

Binghamton has been more successful, taking three of four from Maine in a series that concluded Sunday. The Bearcats also swept Bryant in a three-game set April 17-18, winning 8-7, 13-9 and 4-2.

The forecast calls for clouds and a temperature of 58 degrees at game time.

A game simulator projects a 5-3 Binghamton victory.

The two teams will continue the series with games Saturday and Sunday, also at Varsity Field. After that, Binghamton hosts Massachusetts-Lowell for a three-game set beginning May 14, while Albany travels to Maine for a three-game series starting May 14 before hosting Le Moyne on May 12.
