BYU at Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — Kaysen Raineri pitched five innings of three-hit ball and Logan Hughes hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth inning as Texas Tech edged BYU 2-1 on Thursday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders improved to 25-24 overall and 11-13 in Big 12 play, while the Cougars fell to 24-24 and 9-15.
Raineri allowed one earned run and struck out four, walking two. He got enough support from a bullpen that combined for four scoreless innings. Logan Addison worked two hitless frames with three strikeouts, Johnny Lowe contributed two innings of one-hit ball with three punchouts, and the final out was recorded by the defense.
BYU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a pair of singles from R. Erickson and L. Anderson set the table. E. McNaughton grounded out to advance the runners, and R. Robin drove in Erickson with a groundout to shortstop. That was all the Cougars could muster against Raineri, who settled in after that.
Cougars starter Wayland Crane matched Raineri early, retiring the first 10 batters he faced and carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. But the Red Raiders broke through in the bottom half. G. Thompson led off with a single to center field, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. T. Lopez followed with an RBI single to left field, tying the game. After a double play erased Lopez, Hughes crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his team-leading ninth home run of the season, giving Texas Tech a 2-1 lead.
Crane’s final line was 5 2/3 innings, no hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts. The two runs charged to him came on the only three hits he allowed in the game, including Hughes’ homer.
BYU threatened in the eighth after R. Robin reached on a walk and moved to third on a throwing error by Addison on a failed pickoff attempt, but Addison struck out E. Jones and got C. McChesney to ground out to end the inning. In the ninth, the Cougars put a runner on with a two-out walk to pinch hitter Matt Hasen, but pinch runner Ryker Schow was caught stealing second base to end the game.
Dan Brousseau and Ashton Johnson combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for BYU. Anderson had two of the Cougars’ four hits, going 2-for-4 with a double. Lopez went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for Texas Tech, while Hughes was 1-for-2 with the homer and an RBI. Caden Ferraro was 0-for-4 for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech had won four of its previous five games entering Thursday, including a 9-7 victory over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday. BYU had won two of its last three, topping UNLV 5-2 on Tuesday.
The teams meet again Friday and Saturday in Lubbock to continue the three-game series. Texas Tech then travels to Cincinnati for a three-game set starting May 14, while BYU returns home to host Utah Valley and Kansas in a series beginning the same day.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Texas Tech 5, BYU 3, and its ELO system gave Texas Tech a 61.90 percent probability to win.
