CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning Thursday night, turning a one-run deficit into a commanding lead and rolling to a 13-8 victory over the Louisville Cardinals at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park.

Louisville struck first with two unearned runs in the top of the first. After two strikeouts, Gavin Davis singled and advanced to third when Vance Nugent reached on an error by shortstop Daniel Sheahan. Griffin Crain then doubled to left field, scoring both runners. Miami answered in the bottom of the inning when Jake Ogden tripled and scored on a groundout by Daniel Galvin.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Hurricanes sent 14 batters to the plate and collected six hits, four walks and a passed ball. Ogden drove in the tying run with a single, and Derek Williams drew a bases-loaded walk to give Miami the lead. After a single by Alex Sosa and a two-run single by Mason West pushed the advantage to 6-2, Miami kept pouring it on. Sheahan singled in a run, Ryan Milano singled in another, and a groundout by Jesus Peralta and a passed ball added two more, capping a nine-run frame that made it 10-2.

Louisville starter Wyatt Danilowicz was lifted after allowing two runs on zero hits and two walks in 4⅓ innings, charged with two earned runs. The Cardinals used three relievers in the fifth alone, but Jake Schweitzer gave up three earned runs in 2⅓ innings.

The Cardinals showed fight in the top of the sixth, scoring twice on a run-scoring double by Nugent and an RBI double by Crain. Crain finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Ben Slanker added a grand slam in the eighth, his second home run of the season, capping a 2-for-4 night with four RBIs.

Miami’s Rob Evans earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Evans had struggled in his previous two starts, allowing a combined six earned runs on three hits over 6⅓ innings, but he was sharp Thursday, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced before leaving with a 10-2 lead.

Ogden led Miami’s 14-hit attack, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Williams drove in three runs with a single and a walk, and West also had two RBIs. Miami improved to 34-14 overall and 19-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville fell to 26-24 and 12-18.

The Hurricanes added three more runs in the seventh on Ogden’s RBI single and a two-run single by Williams, building a 13-5 lead. Louisville’s Slanker homered in the eighth off reliever Carson Dorn, but Miami’s Packy BradleyCooney and Lyndon Glidewell combined for 1⅔ scoreless innings to close it.

Louisville had nine hits, with Crain and Slanker accounting for five of them and seven RBIs. Nicholas Ballard threw 1⅓ hitless innings for Louisville in relief.

The teams meet again Friday and Saturday in the second and third games of the series. Miami then travels to Florida State next week, while Louisville returns home to host Bellarmine and Virginia.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami 7, Louisville 5, and its ELO system gave the Hurricanes a 55.20 percent probability to win.
