Milwaukee at Illinois-Chicago
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The University of Illinois-Chicago Flames (20-24) host the Milwaukee Panthers (17-29) in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday afternoon/evening at Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for a time to be announced under cloudy skies with a temperature of 55 degrees.
Milwaukee, coming off a 6-4 win over Valparaiso on Tuesday, will send right-hander Sotaro Ishida to the mound. Ishida (W, 6-4 on May 5) scattered four hits over 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and two earned runs in that victory. His season has been inconsistent, however, as evidenced by a rough outing April 28 at Northwestern (4.2 IP, 0 hits allowed but four earned runs and only two strikeouts in an 8-10 loss) and a brief 3.0-inning appearance April 18 against Northern Kentucky (four hits, three earned runs). The Panthers have lost eight of their past 12 games.
Illinois-Chicago claimed the season’s first meeting, routing Milwaukee 12-5 on March 31. The Flames enter on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Evansville (Interstat) — punctuated by an 11-5 win Sunday. Catcher Thomas Curry has been a driving force. In that series finale, Curry went 5 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Over his past 10 games, Curry has collected hits in seven of them, including multiple-hit performances with RBIs against Valparaiso (April 18-19) and Murray State (April 12). The Flames have won seven of their past nine.
Milwaukee saw power from Charlie Marion (1 for 3, home run, two RBIs) and catcher Dominic Kibler (1 for 3, two RBIs) in Tuesday’s win against Valparaiso.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 victory for Illinois-Chicago.
Following Wednesday’s contest, Milwaukee opens a three-game weekend series Friday at Youngstown State. Illinois-Chicago hosts Illinois State for three games beginning Friday.
