Oregon at Washington
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Oregon Ducks take the field against the Washington Huskies in a Big Ten series finale Sunday evening at Husky Ballpark, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. under cloudy skies and 71 degrees.
Oregon (34-11) enters on a significant roll, having won 10 of its last 11 contests. The Ducks secured the series opener 6-4 on Friday, powered by designated hitter Naulivou Lauaki Jr., who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. He has been the team’s most consistent bat, hitting .348 over his last 10 games with three homers and 10 RBIs. Oregon’s pitching staff has been effective, allowing three runs or fewer in seven of its last nine games.
Washington (19-25) has struggled to find consistency, dropping four of its last five. The Huskies’ best hope lies with right-hander Jackson Thomas, who turned in a strong start Friday: 6.0 innings, two hits, no earned runs, three strikeouts. Thomas has been Washington’s most reliable arm, posting a 1.50 ERA over his last two starts covering 11 innings. The Huskies’ offense has been streaky, averaging just 3.4 runs over their last five games.
The Ducks and Huskies split the first two games of this three-game set, with Saturday’s result pending. Oregon’s high-powered lineup, which averages 7.2 runs per game, could pose problems for a Washington bullpen that has a 6.10 ERA in May.
A computer simulation by Interstat projects an 8-4 Oregon victory.
Following this series, Oregon travels home to host Grand Canyon on Tuesday, while Washington stays in Seattle for a midweek contest against Seattle.
