Florida at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — Florida Gators routed the Oklahoma Sooners 13-2 in eight innings Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park, clinching the Southeastern Conference series after splitting the first two games.

The Gators, who improved to 31-17, exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and never looked back. Oklahoma fell to 30-16.

Florida right-hander Russell Sandefer delivered a dominant start, working seven innings while allowing one earned run and striking out seven. He did not yield a hit according to the official line, though the Sooners managed seven hits total in the game. Sandefer’s outing came on the heels of a rough start against Texas A&M on April 26, when he gave up three earned runs over five innings.

The game began in a stalemate. Florida put runners on base in the first but could not score. The Gators broke through in the second when Karson Bowen homered to right field. Kyle Jones added a solo shot to left in the third, giving Florida a 2-0 lead.

Oklahoma answered in the bottom of the third. An error by the shortstop allowed Kade Branch to reach base, and after a strikeout, Cade Johnson singled. Brayden Brock followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Branch. The run was unearned. The Sooners tied the game in the fourth when Dax LaChance homered to left.

The fifth inning turned the contest into a rout. Hayden Yost led off with a home run down the right-field line. After two hit batters, Ethan Surowiec launched a three-run homer to right, scoring Jones and Blake Cyr. Michael McDonald singled, and two pitches later Bowen crushed his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left. Landon Stripling then homered to right. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Brody Kurland to score, capping the eight-run outburst. Florida sent 13 batters to the plate and used four Oklahoma pitchers in the inning alone.

Bowen finished 3 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs. Yost went 2 for 4 with two homers and three RBIs. Surowiec was 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs. Jones added a solo homer and an RBI double, finishing 2 for 4. Stripling also homered and drove in a run. The Gators finished with 13 hits.

Oklahoma starter Cord Rager took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits over 4⅓ innings while striking out seven. Jaden Barfield struck out one in a third of an inning of relief. Jason Bodin worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

The Sooners threatened in the fourth after LaChance’s homer, loading the bases with a walk and a single, but Sandefer induced a groundout to end the inning. He retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth before departing after seven innings.

Ricky Reeth pitched a perfect eighth inning for Florida, striking out one.

Sunday’s win gave Florida the series after Oklahoma took the opener 4-3 on Friday and the Gators evened the series with a 10-5 victory Saturday. The Gators have now won two of their last three SEC series. Oklahoma had won its previous two series against Missouri and Texas A&M but dropped the weekend set to Florida.

Florida returns home to face North Florida on Tuesday before hosting Kentucky for a three-game series starting Friday. Oklahoma travels to Arkansas for a weekend series beginning May 8.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Oklahoma 7, Florida 3. The Interstat ELO system gave Florida a 52.20 percent probability to win the game.
