Florida A&M at Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — Florida A&M visits Grambling on Sunday, May 3, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference series finale at Memorial Gym. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, with weather forecast at 71 degrees and cloudy skies.

The Rattlers (21-19) enter the game after a 15-13 win over Bethune-Cookman on April 26. Grambling (17-24) dropped an 11-12 decision at Alcorn State on April 27. Florida A&M won Saturday’s series opener, giving it a 1-0 lead in the three-game set.

Third baseman Jay Campbell is a player to watch for Florida A&M. Campbell went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Sunday’s win over Bethune-Cookman. Over his last 10 games, he is batting .333 (13-for-39) with a home run, 12 RBIs and a 1.0-inning scoreless appearance on the mound. He recorded three hits and drove in six runs in a 23-8 win at Jackson State on April 12.

For Grambling, first baseman James Woody is a key bat. Woody went 3-for-6 with two RBIs in a 20-8 win at Alcorn State on April 27, though he went 0-for-5 in the nightcap loss later that day. Over his last five games, he has four hits in 17 at-bats.

Sunday’s game carries postseason implications in the SWAC standings. Florida A&M’s next 10 games include series at Alabama A&M and home against Texas Southern. Grambling faces Arkansas-Pine Bluff, then Bethune-Cookman.

Interstat’s game simulator projects Florida A&M as a 6-5 winner. Its ELO system gives the Rattlers a 59.50 percent probability to win.

Fans should expect a competitive atmosphere as the Rattlers look to build on Saturday’s win, while the Tigers aim to even the series before the weekend concludes. Florida A&M’s lineup, paced by Campbell, will test Grambling’s pitching. Woody’s ability to produce in the middle of the order will be critical for the Tigers’ offense.

First pitch is set for afternoon at Memorial Gym.
