Texas Tech at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor Bears will meet Sunday evening at Baylor Ballpark, looking to salvage the finale of a Big 12 series that saw Saturday’s game upended by weather.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of 72 degrees.
Texas Tech (22-22, 8-14 Big 12) arrives having lost nine of its last 10 games, including a three-game sweep at home against Oklahoma State last weekend. The Red Raiders’ offense has struggled for consistency behind a pitching staff that has allowed 10 or more runs in five of those nine losses.
Left fielder Logan Hughes has been the most consistent Texas Tech hitter, collecting multiple hits in five of his last six games. Over that stretch, Hughes is batting .400 (8 for 20) with two home runs and six RBIs, including a solo homer in the Red Raiders’ 11-2 loss to Oklahoma State on April 26. He is hitting .316 on the season with seven home runs and 34 RBIs.
Baylor (23-21, 9-15) also enters on a slide, having lost four of its last five (Interstat) — including a three-game sweep on the road at Arizona State. The Bears, however, have shown power at the plate, led by first baseman Tyce Armstrong.
Armstrong is coming off a monster performance against Texas-Arlington on April 28, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs in a 6-2 win. In his last five games, the sophomore is 7 for 18 (.389) with four home runs and seven RBIs. Armstrong leads the Bears with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs this season.
The Bears’ pitching staff has been inconsistent, allowing at least 10 runs in four of their last seven losses.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-2 Baylor victory.
The series finale could have implications for the Big 12 tournament seeding, as both teams are fighting to climb out of the bottom half of the conference standings. Baylor is ninth, one game ahead of Texas Tech in 10th.
Following this game, Texas Tech heads home to face Dallas Baptist on Tuesday before hosting BYU for a three-game series next weekend. Baylor travels to Texas State on Tuesday before returning to Waco to host UCF in a three-game set.
