Air Force at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — The Air Force Falcons and New Mexico Lobos conclude their Mountain West series Sunday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT.

Air Force (21-22) dropped Friday’s opener 9-7 but had Saturday’s game postponed. The Falcons look to even the series behind a bullpen anchored by right-hander Richard Rutledge. In his last outing Friday against the Lobos, Rutledge worked 2⅔ innings, allowing one earned run on no hits with one strikeout. Over his past six appearances, the reliever has posted a 4.09 ERA while striking out seven in 10⅔ innings. The Falcons’ offense, which has scored at least 15 runs in four of their past six wins, will rely on first baseman Luke Elmore, who homered and drove in a run Friday.

New Mexico (25-18-1) sits atop the Mountain West standings and has won three of its past four. Right-hander Ethin Woltz has been a key piece out of the bullpen, throwing 3⅓ scoreless innings against Air Force on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out three. Woltz owns a 2.45 ERA in his last four appearances, though he has struggled with command in some outings, notably allowing four earned runs in 2⅓ innings against New Mexico State on April 14. Third baseman Akili Carris went 4 for 5 with an RBI in Friday’s win and is a catalyst for a lineup averaging 7.8 runs per game.

The Lobos have won three of the past four meetings with the Falcons dating to last season. Air Force, however, has shown resilience on the road, splitting a four-game series at Grand Canyon earlier this month. New Mexico’s pitching staff has been inconsistent, surrendering 16 runs in a loss to New Mexico State on Tuesday.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-4 victory for Air Force.

Following this series, Air Force hosts Washington State for a three-game set beginning May 8, while New Mexico travels to Grand Canyon for a three-game series starting the same day.
