Tarleton State at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — The Tarleton State Texans and the Utah Tech Trailblazers wrap up a three-game Western Athletic Conference series Sunday evening at Burns Arena, with both teams jockeying for position near the top of the league standings.
The Texans (29-16) enter with a narrow edge over the Trailblazers (27-16) in the overall record. Tarleton State took the series opener 9-6 on Friday, while Saturday’s outcome was not immediately available. First pitch is scheduled under cloudy skies and 77-degree temperatures.
Tarleton State pitcher Matthew McCullough has been a key contributor in the bullpen, earning wins in four of his past five appearances. In Friday’s victory over Utah Tech, McCullough threw 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, one earned run — unearned — and striking out three. He has allowed just one earned run over his last four outings combined.
Utah Tech counter with infielder Kyle McDaniel, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the series-opening loss. McDaniel has been productive recently, driving in six runs with a home run against Washington State on April 15 and collecting extra-base hits in multiple games since.
The game simulation model from Interstat projects a 7-6 win for Utah Tech, while the site’s ELO system gives Tarleton State a 58.5 percent probability of winning.
Tarleton State has won five of its last seven games, including a midweek loss at Texas A&M. Utah Tech had won three straight before Friday’s defeat, including an 8-3 victory over UNLV.
The Trailblazers will play at Texas-Arlington next weekend, while the Texans return home to host Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
