Arizona State at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — Arizona State and UCF conclude their three-game Big 12 series Sunday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field, with first pitch set for 4 p.m. under partly cloudy skies and a game-time temperature of 87 degrees.
The Sun Devils (32-14) and Knights (26-16) enter the finale tied 1-1 in the series following a split. Arizona State won Friday’s opener 9-4, and Saturday’s game ended in a 1-1 tie, leaving both teams seeking a series advantage in the regular season’s closing weeks.
Arizona State right-hander Cole Carlon is expected to take the mound. The junior has been dominant in his last three starts, including Friday’s win over UCF in which he tossed five innings, allowing no hits and three earned runs while striking out seven. Carlon threw six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts at BYU on April 17 and had another 11-strikeout performance against Baylor on April 24. His only recent setback came April 10 against Utah, when he surrendered eight hits and seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
For UCF, left-handed reliever Max Murray is a key arm out of the bullpen. The sophomore appeared Friday against Arizona State, throwing 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Murray has been used in shorter stints this season, including a 1 1/3-inning appearance against Stetson on April 29, but has struggled with command in other outings. He allowed two earned runs in one-third of an inning against Cincinnati on April 18 and gave up an earned run in one-third of an inning at Kansas on April 10.
The Sun Devils are coming off a 9-4 win Friday in which second baseman Nu’u Contrades went 4 for 6 with three RBIs and reliever Taylor Penn threw 2 2/3 hitless innings with one earned run and three strikeouts.
UCF’s offense was led Friday by third baseman Javier Crespo, who went 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Reliever Braden Calise tossed a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.
Arizona State has won four of its last five games overall, including a series sweep of Baylor. UCF has won three of its last four, including a weekend sweep at Utah.
The Interstat game simulator projects a final score of Arizona State 8, UCF 6.
Following Sunday’s contest, Arizona State travels to Missouri on Tuesday before hosting Oklahoma State next weekend. UCF heads to Florida Atlantic on Tuesday before a three-game series at Baylor starting Friday.
