Northeastern at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Interstat) — Wyatt Hunt’s grand slam in the second inning and RJ Mustaro’s go-ahead single in the third lifted Monmouth to a 5-4 victory over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Baseball Field.

The Hawks improved to 25-19 overall and snapped a two-game losing streak in the Colonial Athletic Association series. The Huskies fell to 28-18.

Hunt finished 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs. His blast to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second erased a 1-0 deficit and tied the game at 4-4. The rally began after Robert Kelly singled, RJ Mustaro walked and Chris Walsh walked, loading the bases for Hunt.

Northeastern had taken the lead in the top of the second. AJ Aschettino doubled and scored on Cooper Tarantino’s double to left-center.

Monmouth took the lead for good in the third. Nick Lovarco singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jimmy Bruno and moved to third on a groundout. Mustaro then singled through the left side, scoring Lovarco to make it 5-4.

Brendan Kenneally pitched seven innings for Monmouth, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Colin Ruddy tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts, and Jake Danyluk retired the only batter he faced in the ninth for the save. David Horvath allowed two hits and one earned run in two-thirds of an inning but was relieved after Northeastern’s two-run ninth.

Northeastern threatened in the ninth. Charlie Criscola singled, stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Henry DiGiorgio reached on a throwing error by second baseman Simmi Whitehill, allowing Criscola to score. Tyler Harmony singled, and Harrison Feinberg reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring DiGiorgio. But Danyluk entered and got Ryan Gerety to foul out to third, ending the game.

Ryan McCarroll started for Northeastern and pitched 4⅓ innings, allowing no hits but one earned run and three strikeouts. Tom Mahoney and Andrew Wertz each threw scoreless relief.

Monmouth totaled six hits and executed two sacrifice bunts. Northeastern had eight hits but left seven runners on base. The teams combined for four errors.

The series began with Northeastern winning 13-10 on Friday and 10-1 on Saturday. Monmouth’s win Sunday avoided a sweep. The Hawks next host Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday before traveling to Hofstra for a three-game set starting Friday. Northeastern hosts Stony Brook for three games beginning Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Northeastern 8, Monmouth 5, and the Interstat ELO system gave Northeastern a 75.70 percent probability to win.
