Columbia at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — Columbia visits Cornell on Sunday for an Ivy League baseball game at Hoy Field, with first pitch scheduled for the afternoon under cloudy skies and a temperature of 49 degrees.

The Lions (12-22-1) enter the matchup after a 7-2 loss to the Big Red on Saturday. Columbia’s pitching staff struggled, with starter Alex Sotiropoulos allowing four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings despite not surrendering a hit; he walked batters and hit others, leading to the runs. Sotiropoulos, a key arm for the Lions, has had an uneven season. In his last four outings he allowed 11 earned runs in a loss to Princeton, six in a win over Yale, four in a loss to Brown, and four more Saturday. His command remains a concern.

For Cornell (11-24), right-hander Ross Yoshida has been a bright spot. He earned the win Saturday against Columbia, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings with one unearned run and three strikeouts. Yoshida has been dominant of late: over his past four appearances he has allowed only two earned runs in 17 2/3 innings, striking out 15. He also threw seven shutout innings in a win at Brown on April 25.

Columbia’s offense was led Saturday by shortstop Jimmy Chadwell, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Lions have been inconsistent, with a 15-15 tie against Yale on April 26 and a recent 16-8 loss at Brown. Overall, Columbia has won four of its last seven games.

Cornell’s Trent Lopez drove in four runs Saturday, including a home run, as part of a 2-for-4 day. The Big Red have won three of their last five, including a 13-inning 2-1 victory at Brown and a 10-6 win at Binghamton.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for Columbia.

Cornell next plays Tuesday at Binghamton.
