Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — Western Kentucky visits Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon in a Conference USA series finale at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of 63 degrees. The Hilltoppers enter with a 24-22 overall record, while the Blue Raiders sit at 23-23.
Middle Tennessee has already clinched the series after winning the first two games. The Blue Raiders defeated Western Kentucky 7-1 on Friday and again Saturday by the same score.
Right-hander David Horn is scheduled to start Sunday for Middle Tennessee. Horn has been the Blue Raiders’ most consistent arm, pitching six shutout innings in Friday’s win. He allowed two hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk. Horn also tossed six scoreless innings against Sam Houston on April 24, though he took the loss, and worked 8 1/3 innings in a win over Delaware on April 17.
Western Kentucky will counter with right-hander Gage Olsen, who also started Friday’s game. Olsen allowed two earned runs on no hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven. In his previous start against Kennesaw State on April 26, he lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs. Olsen has been inconsistent this season, with his longest appearances coming in wins against Austin Peay (4 1/3 innings, two runs) and New Mexico State (one inning, two runs).
The Hilltoppers will look to salvage the finale and avoid a sweep. Western Kentucky has lost nine of its past 12 games overall, including a midweek loss at Louisville. The Hilltoppers’ offense managed just two runs in the two games against Middle Tennessee.
A simulation from Interstat projects a 6-5 Middle Tennessee victory.
Following Sunday’s game, Middle Tennessee travels to Lipscomb on Tuesday before a weekend series at Florida International. Western Kentucky hosts Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday before a three-game set against Dallas Baptist.
