Duke at North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Interstat) — North Carolina hosts Duke in an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, with first pitch scheduled under a forecast of 55 degrees and rain.
The Tar Heels (36-9-1) enter as heavy favorites. They lead the all-time series and have won four of the last five meetings, including a 22-5 rout Saturday at Duke. However, the Blue Devils (23-23) took the middle game of that three-game set, 3-1 on Friday, and have shown flashes of competitiveness despite a .500 overall mark.
Sunday’s game concludes a four-game stretch between the rivals, with North Carolina having taken two of three so far. Duke will look to even the season series and build momentum before a Tuesday home game against Queens (NC).
North Carolina’s pitching staff has been bolstered by the recent performance of right-hander Walker McDuffie. The reliever has been sharp over his last six outings, including a 3.0-inning, scoreless, three-strikeout appearance April 12 at Clemson. In his most recent outing April 28 against Coastal Carolina, McDuffie worked 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts in a losing effort. He also faced Duke on April 23, tossing 1.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn a win.
For Duke, the lineup struggled Saturday, managing only five runs in the blowout loss. Collin Anderson and Tyler Albright were among the productive bats in that game, but the Blue Devils have lost 11 of their last 14 overall. Their pitching staff has allowed double-digit runs in four of the last seven games.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-2 North Carolina victory, and its ELO system gives the Tar Heels a 71.8% probability to win. North Carolina’s offense has been potent, averaging nearly eight runs per game, while Duke’s staff has a team ERA above 6.00.
Following Sunday, North Carolina hosts Winthrop on Wednesday before a three-game series against Pittsburgh. Duke travels to Georgia Tech next weekend for a three-game set.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. EDT. The game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
