Fairleigh Dickinson at NJIT
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights visit the NJIT Highlanders on Wednesday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies and a temperature of 58 degrees.
FDU (26-15) brings a three-game winning streak into the midweek contest after sweeping a weekend series at Mercyhurst. The Knights are coming off a 10-9, 11-inning victory Sunday in which outfielder Hunter Ray went 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs.
Ray has been Fairleigh Dickinson’s most consistent hitter this month. Over his last 10 games, the right fielder has recorded four multihit performances, including a 3-for-6, four-RBI outing April 15 at Fordham and a 3-for-5, two-homer, five-RBI showing April 14 against Fordham. He has homered in three consecutive games.
Pitchers Cooper Montelbano and George Creighton also delivered key outings in Sunday’s win. Montelbano threw three hitless innings, and Creighton added 2 2/3 scoreless frames.
NJIT (14-24) enters the game after snapping a six-game losing streak with a 6-0 shutout at Albany on Sunday. Right-hander Brandon Peterson dominated, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out two.
Peterson has been effective when healthy this season. In his April 4 start against Binghamton, he struck out six over four innings, though he allowed three earned runs. He has not allowed a hit in two of his last four appearances.
Catcher Connor Klock provided the offensive spark Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Reliever Anthony Anzaldi tossed three hitless innings with four strikeouts to close out the game.
The Knights have won eight of their last 12 games, while the Highlanders have dropped 10 of their last 14.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 victory for Fairleigh Dickinson. However, the same service’s ELO system gives NJIT a 57.6 percent probability to win, indicating the models are split on the outcome.
Following Wednesday’s game, FDU returns home to host Central Connecticut in a three-game series starting Friday. NJIT opens a home series against Bryant on Friday.
