Kent State at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Kent State (30-11) visits Pittsburgh (28-14) on Wednesday at Petersen Sports Complex in a midweek nonconference matchup that could provide a glimpse of NCAA tournament form for both teams. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with a forecast of 58 degrees and rain.

Kent State’s Ben Rabatin (0-0, 4.26 ERA) is scheduled to start against Pittsburgh’s Drew Lafferty. Rabatin has been inconsistent this season. In his most recent outing on April 26 at Western Michigan, he allowed two earned runs on no hits over five innings but took the loss. In his prior start April 19 against Ball State, he allowed three runs (three earned) on three hits over five innings in a win.

Lafferty has produced similarly mixed results. On April 26 against Virginia, he allowed one earned run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings in a win. In his previous start April 19 at Virginia Tech, he allowed two earned runs over 3 1/3 innings in a loss.

The Golden Flashes enter on a two-game losing streak. They dropped a 4-3 decision at Western Michigan on April 26 and lost 5-2 at Northern Illinois on April 12. Kent State is 4-3 in its last seven games but has won eight of its last 11.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 7-3 win over Virginia on April 26, a series that included an 11-0 shutout on April 25. The Panthers have won four of their last six.

The teams met once earlier this season, with Pittsburgh pounding Kent State 13-4 on March 24 in Kent, Ohio.

Interstat’s ELO system gives Pittsburgh a 57 percent probability to win, while the simulator projects an 8-7 victory for Kent State.

Lafferty’s recent performances beyond his last two starts include an April 12 outing against California, where he allowed five earned runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings in a loss, and an April 5 game against Wake Forest, where he allowed two earned runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings in a win.

Rabatin’s other recent outings include an April 12 start at Northern Illinois, where he allowed five earned runs (Interstat) — though no hits (Interstat) — over four innings in a loss, and an April 4 game at Ohio, where he allowed two earned runs on no hits over five innings in a win.

Kent State next travels to Akron for a three-game series beginning May 1. Pittsburgh opens a three-game series at Florida State on May 1.

Wednesday’s game is the final nonconference tune-up for both teams before the final stretch of their conference schedules.
