Texas at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns (31-8) face the Vanderbilt Commodores (25-18) on Saturday at 4 p.m. CDT at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium, with both teams seeking control of their Southeastern Conference series after Texas’ 11-4 rout Friday.

The forecast calls for rain and 70 degrees, threatening the second game of the three-game set.

Texas left-hander Dylan Volantis takes the mound after a dominant performance in Friday’s win. Volantis (6-0 this season) threw 6.0 innings, allowing zero hits, one earned run and striking out 11. In his past four starts, all wins, he has posted a 2.31 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 23.1 innings, including a 12-strikeout effort April 17 against Alabama.

Vanderbilt counters with right-hander Jacob Faulkner, who also appeared in Friday’s game, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Faulkner has allowed one earned run over 9.1 innings across his past four appearances, striking out six.

The Longhorns, winners of 10 of their past 13, bring a balanced attack. Center fielder Aiden Robbins hit two home runs Friday, while shortstop Adrian Rodriguez added three hits and three RBIs.

Vanderbilt has dropped four of its past six but won its previous two SEC series against Kentucky and Oklahoma. The Commodores’ offense has shown pop, plating 13 runs in a win at Kentucky on April 19.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Vanderbilt victory, while Interstat’s ELO system gives Texas a 50.6 percent probability of winning.

The series concludes Sunday. Texas then hosts Sam Houston on Tuesday, while Vanderbilt hosts Middle Tennessee on Tuesday before traveling to Alabama next week.
