Pepperdine at Seattle

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Interstat) — Tommy Scavone pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball and Trey Dunn drove in three runs with a third-inning home run, lifting the Pepperdine Waves to a 7-6 victory over the Seattle Redhawks on Saturday at Bannerwood Park.

Scavone, coming off a 5 2/3-inning stint against Loyola Marymount in which he allowed three earned runs but did not give up a hit, was dominant from the start. He struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter while allowing no hits and two earned runs. The right-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before Seattle scratched across a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Reese Hale after Payton Knowles led off with a double.

The Waves answered immediately. In the top of the second, Dunn tripled but was stranded. Then in the third, Pepperdine broke the game open. With one out, Daniel Patterson walked and stole second. Julian Nunez walked, and John Woodworth singled through the right side to score Patterson. Dunn then crushed a three-run homer to left field, giving the Waves a 4-1 lead. Kai Laxa doubled later in the inning but was left on base.

Seattle threatened in the bottom of the third when Kaleb Rhein was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout, but Scavone struck out the next two batters. The Waves added two more runs in the sixth. Laxa singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Sam Romero. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Nunez drove in two more runs with a fielder’s choice groundout, making it 7-1.

Scavone finished his outing after seven innings, having thrown 98 pitches. He allowed only two baserunners after the first inning, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, and stranded both.

Seattle began to claw back in the seventh. With two outs, Hayden Carlson homered to left field to make it 7-2. The Redhawks added another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Drew Beauchaine after an error extended the inning, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

The most dramatic sequence came in the bottom of the ninth. With Pepperdine leading 7-3, reliever Jake Fowler allowed a single to Ben Stinnett and a single to Carlson. After a walk to pinch-hitter Jack Stevenson loaded the bases, Gabe Maya entered and gave up a two-run single to Knowles, making it 7-5. Rhein struck out, but a fielder’s choice groundout by Trey Horner scored Stevenson on an error by second baseman Laxa, trimming the lead to 7-6. Austin Plisinski then came in and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Tyler Jack before striking out Beauchaine to end the game.

Nunez finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Laxa went 3 for 4 with a double and two stolen bases. For Seattle, Knowles was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, and Carlson also had two hits including his solo homer.

Kale Hammer started for Seattle and took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five. Luke Alwood threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Pepperdine improved to 16-26 overall and won the first two games of the weekend series against the Redhawks, who fell to 12-23. The teams close the three-game set Sunday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Seattle 6, Pepperdine 3, while the Interstat ELO system gave the Waves a 51.40 percent probability to win.
