Winthrop at Gardner-Webb
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles and Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs will continue their Big South series Saturday with a doubleheader at John Henry Moss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, with the nightcap set for the evening. The forecast calls for 83-degree temperatures and cloudy skies.
Winthrop (27-15) enters with a strong record but dropped the series opener 3-0 on Friday, managing just five hits. Brayden Gilley took the loss, allowing three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out six. He is a pitcher to watch Saturday. The junior right-hander has been inconsistent, tossing six shutout innings in a win over South Carolina Upstate on April 17 but getting shelled for seven earned runs against Western Carolina on April 2.
Gardner-Webb (19-23) has won three of its last four. Oliver Ellison threw a nine-inning complete-game shutout Friday, allowing five hits with five strikeouts. The senior right-hander has been dominant despite a 4-8 loss to Radford on April 17, where he allowed six earned runs. He has struck out 14 over his last two starts combined.
The Bulldogs got power from Kelvin Agosto and Merik Carter on Friday. Agosto went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Carter also homered.
Winthrop has been streaky, losing its last two — including a 10-8 defeat at Elon on Tuesday — but winning six of its previous eight. Gardner-Webb lost 11-1 to Western Carolina on Tuesday before bouncing back Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Winthrop win, and its ELO system gives the Eagles a 59.5 percent probability of victory.
Following Saturday’s twin bill, the teams conclude the series Sunday. Winthrop then hosts North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, while Gardner-Webb welcomes Wofford.
