AP Sports Preview
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — The Southwestern Athletic Conference series between Texas Southern and Prairie View shifts to Tankersley Field for a Saturday afternoon-evening doubleheader on April 25, 2026, after the Tigers opened the weekend with a dominant 13-0 victory Friday.
The teams will play a split twinbill because of forecasted rain and an 85-degree temperature at game time.
Texas Southern (17-14 overall) will send right-hander Joshua Prieto to the mound. Prieto tossed five innings of shutout baseball in Friday’s win, allowing zero hits and striking out three. In his three prior starts, the sophomore compiled a 3.65 ERA over 12.1 innings with 11 strikeouts, including a 6-10 loss to Alcorn State on April 11 and a 7-5 win at Alabama A&M on April 2.
Prairie View (5-30) counters with right-hander Isaac Herrera, who suffered the loss Friday after allowing eight hits and four earned runs over five innings with one strikeout. Herrera’s season has been uneven: he threw five scoreless innings in a 6-8 loss to Grambling on April 18, but also surrendered four earned runs in a 14-17 loss to Florida A&M on April 2 and five earned runs in a 12-0 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 12.
Texas Southern’s offense is coming off a 13-run outburst Friday, led by left fielder Christopher Chavez, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. The Tigers have won six of their last nine games, including series victories over Alcorn State and Alabama A&M.
Prairie View has lost 11 of its last 12 contests, with its lone win coming April 11 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Panthers have been outscored 82-30 over their last seven games.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Texas Southern as a 6-1 winner, and its ELO system gives the Tigers a 62.8% chance to win.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game at Tankersley Field. Texas Southern then returns home to face Alabama State, while Prairie View travels to play Houston Christian before a neutral-site series against Alabama A&M in Chicago.
