Saint John`s at Xavier
CINCINNATI (Interstat) – Saint John’s Red Storm looks to build on a series-opening victory when it faces the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon with a forecast of 80 degrees and rain.
The Red Storm (22-19) defeated Xavier 12-7 on Friday behind a four-RBI performance from designated hitter Will Cowan, who went 2-for-5. Cowan has driven in at least two runs in three of his last five games and enters Saturday’s Big East matchup as Saint John’s most productive hitter. Adam Agresti added a home run and two RBIs in Friday’s win, while pitcher Victor Frederick threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Xavier (19-24) will look to even the series. The Musketeers are coming off a midweek loss at Vanderbilt but had won four of five before Friday’s defeat. Pitcher Jack DeTienne threw two scoreless innings of relief in Friday’s game, allowing one hit and striking out one. Catcher Jonathan Fitz went 4-for-5 with an RBI, and first baseman Josh Stonehouse added two RBIs.
Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-7 Saint John’s win, though the ELO system gives Xavier a 54.4 percent probability of victory.
The Musketeers host Saint John’s again Sunday at noon before traveling to Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday. The Red Storm head to Hofstra on Tuesday after the series concludes.
