Lehigh at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — Lehigh visits Holy Cross on Saturday for the first game of a Patriot League doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for noon. The Mountain Hawks (12-26) and Crusaders (16-24) meet at Fitton Field in a matchup that could have seeding implications as the regular season enters its final weeks.

Lehigh enters on a high note after an 11-5 win at Saint Peter’s on Wednesday, its second victory in three games. The Mountain Hawks have struggled for consistency, posting a 4-6 record over their last 10 contests. Holy Cross, meanwhile, dropped a 4-3 decision at Dartmouth on Tuesday and has lost four of its last five games.

The teams last met March 21-22 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, when Holy Cross swept a three-game series, winning 7-2, 1-0 and 6-4. The Crusaders outscored Lehigh 14-6 in that set, with the middle game a pitchers’ duel decided by a single run.

Lehigh’s bullpen will be a key factor. Right-hander Ryan Holman, who threw three scoreless innings with six strikeouts in Wednesday’s win, has been erratic this season. In his last five appearances, Holman has allowed 12 earned runs over 8 2/3 innings, but when he commands his fastball, he can dominate. His April 22 outing — 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 6 K — was his best of the season.

Holy Cross counters with right-hander Aidan Gilbert, who also threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts in Tuesday’s loss at Dartmouth. Gilbert has allowed five earned runs over his last 10 innings, striking out 11. He has been effective in long relief but may be asked to start in the doubleheader format.

The weather forecast for game time calls for temperatures in the low 60s with partly cloudy skies, no precipitation expected.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 Lehigh victory, while the ELO system gives Holy Cross a 57.7 percent probability of winning. The discrepancy highlights the unpredictability of two teams searching for consistency.

Saturday’s doubleheader is the first of a four-game series between the Patriot League rivals. Game 2 will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
