VCU at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Virginia Commonwealth visits Richmond on Saturday in an Atlantic 10 matchup at Malcolm U. Pitt Field, with the Rams looking to snap a two-game skid and the Spiders aiming for their third straight win in the series.

VCU (22-19) lost 2-1 to Richmond on Friday, its fourth defeat in five games. The Rams have dropped seven of their last 10 contests overall. Richmond (24-18) has won four of its last five and is coming off a 12-11 walk-off victory Tuesday against William & Mary.

The Saturday afternoon game, slated for 85 degrees with cloudy skies, pits two pitchers who squared off Friday. VCU right-hander Elias Holbert gets another start. He threw four innings Friday, allowing two earned runs on no hits with four strikeouts in the loss. Holbert has tossed at least four innings in each of his last four outings, posting a 3.00 ERA over that span with 13 strikeouts and no hits allowed across 15 innings.

Richmond right-hander Chase Topolski, who earned the win Friday, returns to the mound. He worked six innings, scattering three hits with no earned runs and two strikeouts. Topolski has been sharp in his last three starts, posting a 0.98 ERA over 18 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts. His only rough outing came April 17 against Dayton, when he allowed five earned runs in three innings.

Trends: VCU has struggled on the road this Atlantic 10 season, losing seven of its last nine away from home. Richmond has been strong at Pitt Field, winning six of its last eight.

Projections: Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Richmond victory. The Interstat ELO system gives VCU a 51.2 percent chance to win, a discrepancy that reflects the close nature of Friday’s one-run game.

History: Richmond has taken the last two meetings, both decided by a single run. The Spiders lead the season series 2-0 entering Saturday.

The teams conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon before VCU travels to Old Dominion on Tuesday and Richmond visits Davidson next weekend.
