Hofstra at Northeastern
BROOKLINE, Mass. (Interstat) — Northeastern looks to build on a dominant series-opening win when the Huskies host Hofstra in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game Saturday evening at Parsons Field.
The Huskies (24-16) defeated the Pride (14-20) 8-0 on Friday, a game in which Northeastern right-hander Robbie O’Connor tossed six shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out seven. O’Connor, a key arm for Northeastern this season, is scheduled to start Saturday’s matchup against Hofstra’s Carlos Martinez in a rematch of Friday’s pitching duel.
O’Connor has been sharp in his recent outings. In his last four starts, he has allowed just one earned run over 20⅔ innings, striking out 24. His most dominant performance came April 17 against North Carolina A&T, when he threw five hitless innings in a 15-0 win.
Martinez, the Pride’s ace, struggled Friday, surrendering four earned runs on zero hits over 5⅓ innings while walking four and striking out nine. Prior to that outing, however, Martinez had been excellent. Over his previous three starts, the right-hander posted a 2.25 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 20 innings, including a 6⅔-inning, 15-strikeout performance April 17 at UNC Wilmington.
The weather forecast calls for clear skies and a game-time temperature of 53 degrees.
Northeastern enters the game with significant momentum. The Huskies have won four of their last five games, including a three-game sweep at North Carolina A&T last weekend. Hofstra has dropped four of its last five, including a 12-0 loss to UNC Wilmington on April 18.
The teams split a four-game series March 27-29 at Hofstra, with the Pride winning twice in walk-off fashion. Northeastern won the opener 12-11 on March 28 before Hofstra answered with an 11-10 victory in 11 innings March 27 and an 11-10 win March 29.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Northeastern holds a 7-5 edge in projected final score. The system gives the Huskies an 81.4 percent probability to win.
The game is the second of a four-game series between the two Colonial rivals. The teams conclude the series Sunday at Parsons Field before Northeastern travels to Maine on Wednesday. Hofstra returns home to host Saint John’s on Tuesday.
